You can easily understand how deeply honored and touched I am by the decision to award me such a high and significant distinction for my unflagging friendship (we heard the words of the motivation) towards the State of Israel and the Jewish people. I can only say that my determination to analyse, to denounce and to fight any form of anti-Semitism and any destructive approach to the crucial problem of the existence and security of the State of Israel is an integral part of my anti-fascist education and of my democratic consciousness. And, in the growing over the years of my understanding and determination in this sense, I owe very much to the lesson of President Peres, to his example and to the dialogue I could establish with him since our first meeting and conversation in Israel 28 years ago.
I have to thank him also for the generous words he just addressed me and for reaffirming his conviction : more than ever, time has come for peace. I think that this conviction will be the fundamental legacy of Shimon Peres.
Let me extend the expression of my gratitude to all those - the special Committee - who played a role in the decision concerning me and to all of you who participate in this ceremony.
